If you've served in the military, you probably know all about Challenge Coins. These coins have been a proud tradition in the American military for over a century, representing everything from small units to top command offices. But where did this meaningful custom start?
There are a few exciting stories about the origins of Challenge Coins. One popular legend tells of a wealthy American lieutenant who, wanting to create a special bond with his unit, commissioned custom coins for each member. He even wore his own coin in a small leather pouch around his neck.
Then, as the story goes, his plane was shot down over Germany, and he was captured by German soldiers. They took away anything that could identify him—except for the small pouch around his neck. When he managed a daring escape, he soon encountered a group of French soldiers who, not recognizing him and wary of his accent, assumed he was the enemy. Just before they decided to execute him, he pulled out his coin, revealing his unit’s insignia. Recognizing the symbol, one of the French soldiers spared his life. He finally returned to his squadron, and carrying a unit-embellished coin became a tradition for all servicemen.
Another origin story dates back to the Vietnam War. This version involves a particular bar run by Army infantry, where “outsiders” had to buy drinks for the whole bar if they couldn’t prove they’d been in combat. Soldiers used various “proofs,” like enemy bullets, to avoid the tab—but the stakes kept rising, with some even bringing grenades and rockets! To simplify, the Challenge Coin became the accepted proof of service, turning into a tradition that’s still alive today as the “coin check”—the source of the name "Challenge Coin."
Regardless of its exact origin, the Challenge Coin is cherished today as a powerful symbol of camaraderie and remembrance.
